Four-Year Career Development Plan

Freshman Year: Getting Started

  • Stay involved in Freshman Seminar where you learn vital skills
  • Take a variety of classes that interest you in a variety of disciplines
  • Explore majors to find our what they are really about (talk with professors and current students)
  • Get involved in activities outside of class where you can develop skills
  • Make and appointment in the CDC for career exploration
  • Use the DISCOVER program in the CDC
  • Find a summer job related to your interests

Sophomore Year: Exploring

  • Further explore academic disciplines
  • Decide on a major

Junior Year: Making Decisions

  • Focus on and explore several career possibilities in depth
  • Secure an internship in your major field
  • Continue self-assessment
  • Look at graduate school options and admissions requirements
  • Work to establish professional contacts in areas that interest you (attend The Job Market, find a part-time job in your area of interest)
  • Attend workshops on resume writing, interviewing, and the job search process
  • Start compiling your portfolio if your field requires (art, education, public relations, writing)

Senior Year: Making Connections

  • Register with Career Services
  • Attend workshops on resume writing, interviewing, and the job search process
  • Apply for and take admissions exams for graduate school
  • Apply to graduate schools (apply early for maximum financial aid consideration!)
  • Continue developing professional contacts in your field of interest
  • Continue doing informational interviews
  • Participate in on-campus interviewing
