Education

Lambuth’s graduates have been affecting eternity since the school’s inception—and continue to do so—as classroom teachers and coaches in elementary, middle and secondary schools; as special education teachers and college professors; as department heads, principals and superintendents. The School of Education strives to prepare students well for a professional life focused on its motto, the acronym LEAD—Literacy, Experience, Accountability and Diversity.

With a 100 percent placement rate in public or private schools, these graduates have found the right road at Lambuth for their journey to successful placement in schools across the nation. All certification programs are approved for licensure in the State of Tennessee, and the requirements are reciprocal to other states.

Because Lambuth wants future teachers to experience life in K-12 classrooms from the other side of the desk, even early course work requires students to spend time in the schools observing and teaching. What’s more, elementary education students are required to tutor one-on-one in an elementary school setting; secondary students are encouraged to tutor both students from the community and their Lambuth peers. Opportunities abound for education majors to work with students in our Partners-in-Education schools, helping with field days, participating in other special events and mentoring students. In addition, technology is integrated throughout the curriculum, and mentoring is provided, both during the student-teaching experience and for the novice teacher.

Whatever the teaching focus, education students at Lambuth are involved. They have an active chapter of the Student Tennessee Education Association (STEA), even winning the Spirit Award at the state conference. One member was elected vice-president of West Tennessee STEA, and another won a $1,000 scholarship from the organization.
