Lambuth University is a selective liberal arts university affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Since 1843, when it was founded as the Memphis Conference Female Institute, Lambuth has provided students an opportunity to use their intelligence in the service of God and humanity.

Today, Lambuth University is a nationally respected liberal arts college.  It is listed as one of the “Top 100” colleges in the United States by The Washington Post education writer, Jay Mathews, and scored in the Top Tier of Comprehensive Undergraduate Colleges in the South in the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges magazine.

Since its founding, Lambuth has been an integral part of the City of Jackson and West Tennessee.  With its location in the midtown area of Jackson, the university’s and city’s fortunes are inextricably linked.  The 50-acre campus follows a classic quadrangle arrangement with graceful Georgian Revival buildings framing the quad, presenting the visitor with beautiful vistas of columns through the many trees planted in years past by Lambuth faculty and students.  At the heart of the quadrangle is the R. E. Womack Memorial Chapel, a focal point for the religious and social life on campus.  Additionally, the campus boasts the M. D. Anderson Planetarium and a 25-meter pool.  Students stroll the grounds on the way to class, engaged in lively debate.  On spring afternoons, pick-up games of catch, Frisbee and soccer fill the area with color and life.

Learning for a Lifetime.

It is academics, however, that sets Lambuth apart from the typical university.  Students come from widely differing backgrounds, but with strong academic credentials and preparedness.  Diversity of background and culture form an ideal environment in which to experience college life and learning.  Currently, Lambuth students come from over 25 states and 8 foreign countries.  They come not to learn what to think, but to learn how to think.

For over 160 years, this rich tradition has been characterized by academic quality and service embodied in a faculty who encourage and challenge students to think critically and analytically. Lambuth believes that intellectual pursuit, spiritual development, and service to others are essential components in the education of the whole person.

A Person-Centered Approach to Learning.

As an undergraduate institution, Lambuth's faculty members are committed to teaching as the essential aspect of their profession.  With a person-centered approach to learning, Lambuth offers opportunity for dynamic interaction between students and the faculty. Many of the students are involved in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, service work, and unique academic opportunities such as Model UN, Mid-South Psychology Conference, Mission Trips, study abroad, American College Theatre Festival, and more.

Combined with its liberal arts focus, Lambuth offers the best preparation for anyone seeking an education that teaches about life and becoming a lifelong learner.  Rooted in disciplined learning, an expansive liberal arts education is able to transcend individual disciplines to open the person to the full array of the human experience.

An Education that Incites a Lifetime of Learning.

As evidence of its commitment to the liberal arts, the University has a sequence of courses required of all students. These requirements include  requires courses in religion; competency in communication skills such as writing, speaking, and reading critically; knowledge of subject matter such as natural science, mathematics, social science, fine arts and computer information systems; interdisciplinary courses, and comprehensive evaluation at the senior level.

Liberal education at Lambuth involves a reaffirmation of the Wesleyan emphasis on academic excellence and faith in a world that needs freedom of inquiry, careful analysis, communication, responsibility, and service to others.

Lambuth’s liberal arts foundation is designed to foster a sense of community among students and to inspire them to reach out into the wider community of their city, state, nation, and world.
