Google, the Internet, online databases, and the library.

Internet Search Engines

Google is one of the best search engines on the Internet. Searching 4.4 billion documents, this is only a small fraction of the information on the surface of the WWW. One of the best strategies for a comprehensive web search is to use more than one search engine. Search engines are best for finding specific information. Some of the best search engines are:

Google http://www.google.com

Yahoo! Search http:// search.yahoo.com

ASK.COM http://www.ask.com

Exalead http://www.exalead.com/search/

Directories

Another important search tool is the subject directories. These are good for finding background and overview information. These directories organize sites based on the subject of the site. Most sites have been selected and judged by a human editor. This is the place to start if you want background information on a topic. A few of the best are:

Librarians' Index http://www.lii.org

Infomine http://infomine.ucr.edu

Academic Info http://www.academicinfo.net

About.com http://www.about.com

Yahoo! http://dir.yahoo.com/

The Deep Web

This part of the WWW is made up of publicly accessible databases that cannot be searched by most search engines. BrightPlant estimates that these databases contain 500 times the information of the surface web. The Deep Web is a good place to find news, phone numbers, and digital exhibits.

CompletePlanet http://www.completeplanet.com

Deeppeep http://www.deeppeep.org/

Online Databases

The library subscribes to several online databases. The content here is usually articles from magazines and journals. Many of these articles are also published in paper and the online database contains an electronic version of the article. It is important to remember that the publishers of these journals are in business to make a profit. For this reason most of this information is not available for free on the Internet. Another important aspect is that many of these articles are scholarly and are required sources for your research papers. These databases will be your best source for scholarly information. If you need articles this is the place to look.
