Circulation Policies

Loans

Students: Books from the circulating collection may be checked out for two weeks. There is an unlimited number of items that may be checked out at one time. Items may be renewed two times (except when a hold has been placed on the item), and may be renewed either in person or by phone (425-3289) with patron ID number and item barcode number. Patrons may request any item that is checked out to be held for them when that item is returned. The patron will be notified as soon as the book is available for use.   Students may also check out CDs and leisure videos for one week with one renewal .. A VCR is available for checkout on a weekly basis.

Faculty and Staff: Faculty members may check out any number of books and are requested to return all books at the end of each academic year for inventory purposes.   Staff may check out books for one semester. The books may then be re-checked for the next semester. Media equipment and all CDs and videos may be checked out for one week with two renewals. Faculty or staff may reserve specific equipment needed for university business within a semester by calling circulation at 425-3289. For reservations less than 24 hours in advance, speak to any library staff member. Faculty may also reserve the equipment for student use outside of the library on specific dates for class projects or presentations .   In that case it will be checked out to the student for no more than 24 hours. No fines are charged to faculty and staff.

Other Items: Reference books, periodicals, and audio-visual materials are non-circulating and must be used in the library.

All library materials that leave the library must be checked out at the Circulation Desk. ALL STUDENTS and GUESTS must present a current ID when checking out any library material.

Reserves

A system of reserve materials allows titles in frequent demand for a course to circulate for limited periods of time, thereby serving a great er number of students. A faculty member may place on reserve books, articles, and audiovisual materials that several students or an entire class may view within a given period of time. There are two kinds of reserves:

  1. Strict reserve materials are for use in the library ONLY. They cannot be checked out of the library for any reason at any time, except by a faculty member. Only one item may be checked out at a time except for items to be copied and returned immediately .

  2. Two-day reserve materials may be checked out at the discretion of the professor, and these items must be returned to the library after by closing the second day. Only one item can be checked out at a time.

Electronic Course Reserves

Lambuth University Library now has electronic reserves. To use e-reserves, go to the library home page and click on "Find Course Reserve." Then choose either the instructor or the class and click search. This action will pull up the reserves available for the instructor and the reserves available for the class. Click on the item you want to view. This will send you to the ez-proxy screen. Enter your user name and ID number, and you will be able to view and/or print the item

Fines and Fees

Overdue books accrue a fine of $.10 per day per book. Late charges on strict reserve items are $.05 per hour and $1.00 per day for two-day reserves. No fines are charged to faculty and staff. Fines should be paid at the circulation desk.

Three overdue notices will be sent. However, failure to receive a notice does not exempt the borrower from the obligation to return loaned materials or to pay any fines incurred. If the item is not returned after the third notice, replacement cost plus a $10 processing fee will be sent to the business office to be added to the student's account.

Lost items should be reported to the Circulation Librarian immediately so the accumulation of fines can be stopped. If the item is not found, replacement cost plus a $10 processing fee must be paid.

Replacement costs will be obtained from standard sources, such as Books in Print. If an item is no longer available, then a minimum fee of $75 or the cost of a comparable item will be charged plus the $ 10 processing fee. Guest users will be invoiced for the replacement cost and processing fee.

Guests

Individuals must be registered as guests and issued a guest card in order to borrow materials from the library.

Guest cards will only be issued by members of the circulation staff at a cost of $10.00 per year. Methodist ministers, students and faculties of WeTALC (West Tennessee Academic Library Consortium) institutions, and West Tennessee alumni are exempt from the guest card fee.

Privileges: Guests have entrance to the library free of charge and are asked to sign the guest registry upon entrance. Card holding guests may check out up to three items and renew them once. Guests have in-house use of library materials and facilities. Guest users may be asked to relinquish any library resource if it is needed by a current student or faculty member. Guests may obtain reference service as time allows and after first-priority service to Lambuth faculty, staff, and students has been rendered.

Regulations: All patrons must adhere to the general policies of the library. The Guest card must be presented at the time of charging out materials. Only the person issued the card may use it to charge materials. Violation of this policy may result in the forfeiture of the Guest user card and the privilege of using the library. The registrants themselves are responsible for overdue fines, damage, and replacement costs. User privileges may be suspended due to delinquent fees, for failure to return items in a timely manner , or for allowing others to use the card. Interlibrary loans are not a part of this policy and should be referred to a public library. Since the academic community has priority for use of library materials, all items checked out to guests are subject to immediate recall and must be returned in a timely manner. Guest users must recognize the responsibility for the university library to provide materials representing different viewpoints and diversity of appeal.

Computer Use

Computers are available for use in the library's computer lab for accessing databases, the online catalog, and the Internet. Patrons also have access to Microsoft Office software. Printing is free of charge for one copy of any course-related work. Multiple copies and non-course-related printing is $.10 per page on the honor system payable at the circulation desk.

The library staff reserves the right to ask any patron to leave if that person is doing non-course-related work and other patrons are waiting to use the computer for academic purposes. The computer lab is open the same hours as the library but closes 15 minutes prior.

Photocopying

Two self-service photocopiers are available to the students and the public at a cost of $.10 per page for black and white copies and $.75 for color copies. One of the machines includes a $1 bill changer. The other machine takes dimes only. Change for $5, $10 and $20 bills may be obtained broken at the circulation desk for immediate copy use if change and staff are available.

Microform Reader/Printer

Two microform reader/printers are available to the public for viewing microfilm and microfiche. The cost is $.10 per page for printing. The newer machine is also equipped with a scanner that may be used for scanning microform documents to print or save onto disk or for emailing a personal account. Disks may be purchased from the library staff for $1.00 each.

Interlibrary Loan Policies and Forms

Definition

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service provided to obtain materials which are not available in the Luther L. Gobbel Library and to loan material found in the library to other libraries. The conditions of this service are based on the National Interlibrary Loan Code, 1980; the Copyright Law, title 17, U.S. Code; and special interlibrary loan agreements with consortia such as WeTALC and TennShare.

Users of Interlibrary Loan

ILL service is offered to all Lambuth University students, faculty, and staff. Patrons not currently affiliated with the University are not eligible (i.e., guest card patrons, high school students, alumni, students at other colleges, etc.) and will be directed to their institutions or to the public library.

Limits and Costs

So that all students may have equal access to all resources, there are no limits on the number of ILLs that a student, faculty, or staff member may request. Borrowing and shipping costs imposed by out-of-state lending institutions will be passed on to the borrower if the borrower agrees to such costs. Lambuth University does not charge for lending materials.

Types of Materials Available

The lending library determines what materials are or are not to be loaned. Lambuth University does not lend reference materials, periodicals, archival materials, audio-visual materials, computer software, and bulky or fragile items. Photocopies are made instead of loaning microform materials or periodicals. Any exceptions will be handled on a case-by-case basis and will be made by the Interlibrary Loan Librarian.

Lending Duration

The time allowed for the loan is usually two to four weeks and is indicated on the book. Renewal of borrowed items should be requested prior to the due date. The lending library determines the new due date. All borrowed materials are subject to recall and must be returned promptly. The requester is responsible for any replacement charges assessed by the lending library for materials that are damaged, overdue, or lost.

Lambuth materials (except photocopies) will be loaned for 30 days. Renewals are granted for 30 additional days if the item is not in demand.

Replacement of Lost Books

Lambuth University will charge $75 in the event an item from its collection is lost. Other libraries will have their own charges for lost items from their collections. If a patron loses the item, he/she is responsible for the charge. If the item is lost in transit, the Library will pay the charge.

Procedures

An interlibrary loan request must be completed for each item requested unless other arrangements are made to the ILL office. A Form is available online.

Seven to ten days typically are required to fill a request, although some materials may take longer to obtain. Incomplete requests or requests for items already in our collection will be returned to the requester. Requests may be left with the Interlibrary Loan Librarian.

Patrons will be contacted once their material arrives. Material not picked up within two weeks of being received will be returned to the lending institution.

Responsibilities of the Library

Luther L. Gobbel Library is responsible for compliance with the Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S. Code) and its accompanying guidelines, and will inform its users of the applicable portions of the law. An indication of compliance will be provided with all copy requests.

The library will use it local resources before initiating loan requests. Materials requested should be described as completely and accurately as possible, following accepted bibliographic practice.
