R.E. Womack Chapel

100_2083The R.E. Womack Memorial Chapel is the visual centerpiece of Lambuth University’s quadrangle on what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful college campuses in the South. More importantly, it is the religious and social focus of the university and its most important element in achieving the mission of the institution.

In the mid 1950s, construction began on the chapel with the official dedication being held April 29 and 30, 1957. A three-manual pipe organ was added in 1958. The chapel was subsequently rededicated in 1974 in honor of R.E. Womack, President of the University from 1924 to 1952.

The chapel was redecorated in the 1980s. Then in 2007, the chapel underwent complete renovation, including cosmetic upgrades, such as new windows, new carpet, new paint and the installation of a new sound system.

Interesting Facts:

  • The chapel seats 660 comfortably.
  • 110,775 bricks were used during construction.
  • The height of the steeple to the top of the wind vane is 108 feet.
  • The first wedding in the chapel was that of Rachael Gobbel Norment on December 21, 1957.
  • Carl Perkins’ funeral was held at the chapel in 1998.
