The R. E. Womack Memorial Chapel is the visual centerpiece of Lambuth University’s quadrangle on what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful college campuses in the south. More importantly, it is the religious and social focus of the University and its most important element in achieving the mission of the institution.
The mission of Lambuth University, an institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church, is to provide students with a broad-based liberal arts education of high quality which stimulates free inquiry, critical thinking, cultural understanding, and sense of purpose within a Christian, person-centered environment that prepares them for meaningful careers, leadership, global citizenship, service to God and humanity, and the lifelong pursuit of truth and knowledge.
Inspired by the Women’s Society of Christian Service of the Memphis Conference of the United Methodist Church, a fundraising campaign began in the mid 1940’s to underwrite the construction of the building, originally dedicated to “... honor those students and conference members who have served their country in the present world conflict.”
It was not until the mid 1950’s, however, that the dream became realized and construction began on the chapel with the official dedication occurring on April 29 and 30, 1957. As described in The Vision, Lambuth’s campus newspaper ... “On April 29 and 30 Lambuth College will hold a convocation that will be an occasion to dedicate a new chapel. A very meaningful program has been planned for all who participate. The dedicatory address will be by Bishop William T. Watkins, of Louisville, Kentucky.”
A three-manual pipe organ was added in 1958. The chapel was subsequently rededicated in 1974 in honor of R. E. Womack, President of the University from 1924 to 1952. The last refurbishment of the Chapel occurred in the early 1980’s. Since that time, the facility has received routine maintenance; however, use and wear now require that the Chapel be cosmetically updated.
PROPOSAL:
Provide a gift of $60,000, or a portion thereof, to enable refurbishment of the R. E. Womack Memorial Chapel.
