Special Programs

Excellence is at the core of our liberal arts curriculum. One of the many concepts we take pride in is our writing-based curriculum, meaning that every discipline offers “W” classes and that every Lambuth graduate must complete two “W” courses outside the major. Lambuth has many other innovations.

Lambuth Honors Program

The Honors Program is a three-semester sequence of courses taught by several members of the faculty. The purpose of this program is to offer interested, excellent students an opportunity to study with faculty members in ways that are different from formal classroom settings. Topics cover psychology and sociology, business, science and ecology, religion, history and ethics, political science, and arts and literature. In an age of ever-increasing knowledge and easy access to vast amounts of information, the Lambuth Honors Program focuses on, in Ortega’s words, “what can be learned” instead of “what should be taught.”

Lambuth Scholars

Lambuth Scholars are outstanding seniors, selected by faculty, who are deemed capable of independent scholarly activities.

Special Major/Minor

The Special Major is available for students who wish to design a unique major to fit their needs, combining two or even three academic disciplines, for example, English, art, and religion. Students who wish to enter this program must develop a proposal for the Special Major in conjunction with a faculty advisory committee and make application to the Academic Dean. In addition, a Special Minor may be developed, combining two disciplines and focusing on a particular interest area. Applications are available in the Office of the Registrar.

Interdisciplinary Program

Lambuth requires all students to participate in the Interdisciplinary Program, consisting of three courses: Freshman Seminar (for entering freshmen) and The Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, taken at the junior and senior levels. In the final course, students prepare their senior theses, using selected major ideas of the twentieth century and applying those to their major fields of study.

Pre-Professional Programs

Students wishing to take courses leading to the ministry, dentistry, engineering, medical technology, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, religious education, and other professions may prepare for these professions at Lambuth University. Those students who wish to enter a professional school before graduating from Lambuth may earn a Lambuth degree through the Three-Year Residence Program (see Special Programs). This can be done simultaneously with the completion of a degree at a professional school.

Lambuth University offers pre-professional programs in the following fields:

  • Engineering
  • Law
  • Ministerial
  • Dentistry
  • Medicine
  • Optometry
  • Medical Technology
  • Pharmacy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Nursing
  • Cytotechnology
  • Dental Hygiene
  • Health Information Management

Three-Year Residency Program

Students who wish to enter an accredited professional school (medicine, dentistry, engineering, etc.) At the end of their junior year may receive a Bachelor's degree from Lambuth University by completing core requirements, major and minor requirements, G.P.A. requirements, a minimum of 96 semester hours and by transferring 32 hours from the professional school upon satisfactory completion of that work. With departmental approval, eight hours of the final 32 to be transferred may be used to meet certain Lambuth requirements not otherwise completed. To be considered for this three-year residence program, a letter of intent should be filed in the Academic Dean's office by mid-term, Spring semester of the Junior year. This letter will begin the process of a degree audit, designation of courses to be transferred from the professional school and their use, appropriate signatures which must be acquired before the program is approved and arrangements with the office of the Registrar to carry the files, receive the transcript from the professional school and receive notification from the student through a diploma application of the anticipated Lambuth graduation date.

Entertainment/Music Industry Studies Program

MUSIC_lambuth_2The innovative Entertainment/Music Industry Program was designed with the music industry of tomorrow in mind. In the state-of-the-art recording facility, built around a ProTools HD3 system, featuring a 3 ghz 8 core Intel MacIntosh, students also have the following gear: two Yamaha O2RV2 consoles with a JBL LSR4300 monitoring system. Two isolation booths offer flexibility in recording, while the main tracking room is capable of holding a full orchestra. E/MI students will develop skills in engineering, production and performance. In addition, the program covers artist management and marketing, and the program will function as an independent record label, affording students the opportunity to gain varied hands-on experience. Within the E/MI record label, students will train and develop as performers, hone their skills as worship leaders, work as booking agents, engineer and produce CDs of various ensembles and even shoot and produce music videos! With two distinct areas of study, music business and music technology/performance, E/MI students will gain the skills and knowledge required to compete in tomorrow’s music marketplace.

Environmental Studies and Environmental Science

CLRMS_MATHSCIENCE_bio8Environmental Studies and Environmental Science, two relatively new majors, are designed as interdisciplinary programs for the study of the earth’s environment. The Environmental Studies major combines courses in science with courses in the social sciences. The Environmental Science major requires more of a science background.

Speech Therapy Program

The new Speech Therapy Program, which began in Fall 2007, provides full teacher licensure as a speech therapy teacher at the bachelor’s degree level, thus addressing the very real national need for such special educators. Lambuth also seeks to fill the nationwide shortage of teachers with licensure in hearing impairments. These programs offer supervision from the local public schools, the West Tennessee School for the Deaf and the West Tennessee Speech and Hearing Center. For selected post-baccalaureate individuals and special education assistants, the special BASE-TN program offers tuition assistance in a joint program between the State of Tennessee and Lambuth University.

Social Work Program

Re-instituted in the Fall of 2007, the Social Work Program is already offering courses in policies and services, family issues and other areas, with curriculum expansion continuing and faculty to be added. The program focuses on training students to work with individuals, families, groups, communities and organizations and also encourages students to be community and campus leaders.

Study Abroad Programs

Lambuth offers many opportunities for International Travel and Study Abroad. Each summer, the Lambuth in London program offers students a chance to study Shakespeare, British Politics, or French at Regent’s College. Lambuth also offers a six-week program in Aix-en-Provence, France, in which students may study art and conversational French at the Marschutz School of Painting or focus on French language, literature and cultural studies at the Institute of the American Universities. As a member of the Mid-Continent Consortium, Lambuth also sponsors study programs in Chicoutimi, Quebec; Toledo, Spain; and Guanajuato, Mexico. Too, Lambuth students are encouraged to study abroad during semester or year-long programs in many countries. Read more....

West Tennessee Designers’ Showhouse

paintedlady2The only student-produced program of its kind in the United States, the West Tennessee Designers’ Showhouse has its home at Lambuth University. Attracting people from all over the Mid-South, the Designers Showhouse is the culmination of extensive planning, study, and hands-on work, achieved by collaboration among students, faculty and professional designers and resulting in an impressive two-week-long extravaganza. A massive project offered once every four years, the Showhouse involves students from all areas of Family and Consumer Sciences, including foods and nutrition, fashion merchandising and interior design, giving them practical experience in their fields by working closely with area designers and other professionals. Not only is a structure completely gutted, renovated and redecorated, but also an array of programs—from lectures and luncheons to gift shops and fashion shows—is offered by students, faculty, and professionals.
