Lambuth Maintains Accreditation

Lambuth University officials received the findings of the school’s regularly scheduled Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) review today, and the review concluded that the University maintains its accreditation with a status of probation.

The SACS Reaffirmation Report provided special commentary regarding the University’s academic program stating, “It should be noted that the Committee unanimously recognizes that the essence of the academic programs at Lambuth University [is] exemplary and the commitment and pride of the faculty and students [are] outstanding.”

“Lambuth’s accreditation will continue during a probationary period,” said Lisa Warmath, Director of Institutional Research at Lambuth. “This will allow us ample time to complete the action plans already in place. SACS will continue to monitor the University’s progress.”

The initial report provided recommendations based upon the state of the University during the on-site visit in November 2008. Some of the recommendations were addressed and resolved immediately; others, such as the financial issues, require an extended period of time.

“It is no secret that the financial health of Lambuth has been a concern, as is the case at several other higher education institutions at this time, and this particular challenge has served as the main reason for the period of probation,” Warmath said.

“We expected this decision, as we are completely cognizant of the state of the University and how this relates to our compliance with The Principles of Accreditation,” explained Warmath. “Institutions accredited by SACS work constantly to ensure compliance with these Principles,” Warmath said. “Areas that received recommendations in the Reaffirmation Report were immediately addressed with action plans. The response submitted to SACS in April of this year documented compliance with the majority of the recommendations. Over the coming months, we will continue to address the remaining recommendations.”

Lambuth University is affiliated with the United Methodist church, and was founded in 1843. In the ensuing years, Lambuth has earned a reputation as one of the South’s premier liberal arts universities and has received national recognition as one of the nation’s Top 250 Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News & World Report and as one of the nation’s “Top 100 Outstanding Colleges” by The Washington Post.
